BIRTH-MARRIAGE-DEATH-BURIAL-IMMIGRATION-MOTHER-SPOUSE-CHILDREN-RESIDENCES- BIOGRAPHY: William G McLoughlin, CHAMPIONS OF THE CHEROKEES: EVAN AND JOHN B JONES; 1788-1876; Princeton, NJ, Princeton Univ Press, 1990; see esp pp 17-18, 97, 101, 443; Concordia College Library, Moorhead, MN, E99.C5 J6 (Rick Crume's file #M 797); NOTE: "Evan Jones was born in Brecknockshire, Wales, on May 14, 1788. Little is known of his early life beyond the fact that his middle-class parents apprenticed him to a linen-draper at the age of fifteen. He was raised to speak English and Welsh, joined the Anglican Church, received a moderate education, and was expected to raise himself from draper's assistant to an independent, small shop owner or tradesman. Working in the same store with him was a young woman named Elizabeth Lanigan, described later as "a woman of good judgment and education and possessed [of] an eminently devout and benevolent spirit." They were married in 1808 and moved to London. Here they became Methodists. Not caring for the draper's business, Jones improved on his education and after learning some Greek, Latin, and Hebrew either opened a school or became a tutor. He later described himself as "an experienced teacher." This evidently did not provide sufficient income for his growing family. Returning to the draper's trade, he opened a small shop of his own near Ludgate Hill in London. His fourth child, Hannah, was born at 20 Ludgate Hill in 1816. The three other children were named Elizabeth, Samuel, and Ann. Later accounts speak of Evan Jones as having been a "merchant" for thirteen years in London, but evidently with little success. He seems to have had no head for business. Early in 1821 he decided to emigrate with his family to America and enter some other line of work.
"He probably had some relatives among the many Welsh emigrants living in or near Philadelphia, for the family settled in the Welsh community of Berwyn just west of the city. (In later correspondence Jones mentioned that his mother, Ann Jones, lived in Philadelphia; Evan Jones's son, John B. Jones, spoke of his "Uncle John" as living in the United States. But whether Evan Jones's mother and a brother preceded or followed him to the United States is not known.) Here he and his wife gave up Methodism and joined the Great Valley Baptist Church, led by the Reverend David Jones (perhaps a distant relative) and a young Welsh assistant pastor, Thomas Roberts. That summer the Baptist Foreign Mission Board advertised in its mission journal for volunteers to become missionaries among the Cherokee Indians who lived at the place where four states joined together: Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama. Jones and his whole family volunteered."

p. 432: Wm. Parry, the English joiner.
p. 485: Mr. Parry at first was "general factotum" for Clement Paine, having charge of his many properties and it may be said he was never abashed by the austerity of his employer. In 1833 he became keeper of the Chemung bridge, and all the reminiscences of "Commodore Parry" are in the bridge house, where he spent twenty-five years of his life.
"Wit was as natural with him as breathing, though it is as impossible to describe wit as to define the taste of old wine of the odor of flowers. If a good hearty laugh is better than medicine, then William Parry did his full share in a sanitary way for Athens. There was but one street in the town, and a joke by Parry, when started at his end of it, would be caught up and carried along to the other, until the entire street resounded with convulsive laughter." W.F.W.
p. 494: The only dwelling at date of incorporation seems to have been that of William Parry (now owned by Mrs. Michael Brown).
p 526: The bridge, when built, must have been a flimsy affair, as it went out in a flood in 1833 and was rebuilt in 1836. It was then a covered bridge, with wooden piers. Rufus Wright was the earliest toll keeper of who we have record. But the one best remembered after him was the genial Welshman, William Parry, who knew everybody passing, and their business.
