" In giving a condensed sketch of the early history of township No. 9, as originally surveyed for Phelps and Gorham, and now embraced in the town of Canandaigua, it seems best to begin with Cheshire, the only village and the commercial center of the district.
Cheshire was first known as Rowley's School House, from an early school building erected on the lands of John Rowley, the first settler on the site of the village, in 1795. His was the first house erected... Mark Doolittle and Selma Hotchkiss were also early settlers near the farm of Frank Odell."
