LEETE, William, Guilford, signer the planta. covenant of 1 Jun 1639, was
an Assistant of New Haven college 1643 to 1657, deputy-governor 1658,
Governor 1661 to 1665; on the union with Connecticut became an Assistant
to 1669, then deputy-governor to 1676, when, on death of Gov. Winthrop, he
was chosen to that office, and so by annual election till his death at
Hartford, 16 Apr 1683. He was often a Commissioner of the Unit. Col.
of New England from 1655 to 1679. Of three wives I presume the first wife,
Ann, who died 1 Sep 1668, or rather was buried that day, was mother of all
the children: John, born about 1639; Andrew; William; Abigail; Caleb, 24
Aug 1651, died at 21 years; Graciana, 22 Dec 1653; Peregrine, 12 Jan 1658,
died young; Joshua, died 22 Feb 1660, probably very young; and Ann, 15 Mar
1662. Abigail married 26 Oct 1671, Rev. John WOODBRIDGE of Killingworth,
and Ann married 9 or 19 Nov 1683, John TROWBRIDGE, and, next, 1696,
Ebenezer COLLINS; and Graciana lived long, infirm in body and mind. His
second wife, Sarah, married 7 Apr 1670, had been widow of Henry ROTHERFORD,
died 10 Feb 1674. Mary, the third wife, widow of Rev. Nicholas STREET, who
outlived him but a few months; had been wife of Gov. Francis NEWMAN.
