Hoag first settled in this area according to my aunt who remembered being there as a girl. Both of these roads have been called "Shumway"... probably 1A, since it is known as "Shumway Hill," is correct. It is actually in the town of Guilford, not Holmesville." Rick Crume's file H 678.

Daniel Hoag, who was to remain in the area for a short period, was also a settler in the century's earliest years... The ambitious Joseph Spier was determined to advance the area by establishing its own local government. Spier worked diligently, enlisting fellow settlers at Wells settlement and the scattered few at Lake Pleasant. In 1805, his object was achieved with formation of the Town of Wells, the first town within the present confines of Hamilton County... The Town of Wells alloted two road districts to the Lake Pleasant area... The overseer was Daniel Hoag... Two new roads were surveyed in the area in 1806.
