WOLCOTT, Henry, Dorchester 1630, was born about 1578, in the southern
part of Somersetshire at or near Wellington, not far from the edge of
Deveonshire and thus, probably gained sympathy with the puritans of the
west who projected the voyage of the Mary and John in Mar of that year.
He was honored with a commission from the crown, as a justice before
leaving home, as tradition tells, and had good landed estate as perhaps
may be inferred from a very valuable letter of his brother, John, 15 Apr
1639, printed in Genealogical Record II.373. He desired administration as
freeman 19 Oct 1630, and was sworn 1 Apr 1634. His wife, Elizabeth
SAUNDERS, married about 1607, was his companion in the traverse of the
wilderness to plant the first town, named Dorchester, but soon after,
Windsor, on the Connecticut in Oct 1635, and outlived him but few weeks.
Their children, Henry, born about 1610; George; Christopher; Ann, born
about 1620; Simon, 1625; and Mary; were all brought from England. He is the
first officer named in the records of Connecticut, page 1, chosen 26 Apr
1636, constable, and in Apr 1643 Assistant, till his death was largely
engaged in business, and died 30 May 1655. No will is preserved. His widow
died 7 or 17 Jul following, aged 73. Ann married Matthew GRISWOLD; and
Mary married 25 Jun 1646, Job DRAKE. Of Christopher notice is never seen,
but that he died 7 Sep 1662.

In 1639 or 1640 he is first mentioned in Connecticut at the same time with Thomas, Jr. who may be the freeman of 18 May 1642 in Massachusetts, there left by his father whose death is early heard of, though exact date is not gained. His widow Margaret was very resolute and capable, and after two or three years removed with all her children, except Thomas and Ann, to Springfield, there died 28 Aug 1684. She had nine children and it has been absurdly said that all were brought from England. Of most, this is true. Ann, who married 29 Apr 1642, Robert Chapman of Saybrook; Mary married 26 Nov 1646, Joseph Parsons; Thomas; Nathaniel; Lawrence; and perhaps Samuel; were born in England, but our side of the water may claim, probably Sarah, married 20 Jul 1659, John Scott; Elizabeth married 15 Feb 1670, as his second wife, Miles Morgan; possibly Hannah, who died 25 Jan 1662 unmarried and certainly John.

STEBBINS, Rowland, Springfield, came from Ipswich, County Suffolk, in the
Francis, 1634, aged, as the custom house record says, 40, with wife, Sarah,
43, and four children, Thomas, 14; Sarah, 11; John, 8; and Elizabeth, 6;
beside Mary WINCH, perhaps a relative. The family Memoir says, he first
settled at Roxbury, where however is no mention of him, but he probably
went with PYNCHEON, founder of Springfield, the next year after landing
at Boston in Jun. At Springfield his widow died 4 Oct 1649; and he some
years later removed to Northampton, there died 14 Dec 1671. In his will of
1 Mar 1670 he names only the children brought from England. Sarah had
married 14 Jan 1641, Thomas MERRICK; and Elizabeth married 2 Mar 1647,
John CLARK, both of Springfield.

GOODENOW, GOODNOW, or GOODENOUGH, Thomas, Sudbury, younger brother of
John, elder of Edmund, came in the same ship with them 1638, aged 30,
called in the clearance of Shaftsbury, which is a borough of Dorset, in
the border of Wiltshire, and but three and five miles from the respective
homes of his brothers. He brought wife Jane, son Thomas, aged one year and
sister Ursula. The women's ages are not given in the custom house records,
but Ursula, we are told by BARRY, died at Sudbury, 23 Apr 1653. He was
freeman 10 May 1643, and by wife Jane had here Mary, born 25 Aug 1640;
Abigail, 11 Mar 1642; Susanna, 20 Feb 1643, died soon; Sarah, 20 Jan 1644,
died at 10 years; Samuel, 28 Feb 1646, before mentioned; Susanna, again, 21
Dec 1647; Elizabeth, who died 28 Dec 1653; and Jane, who, in 1672, was wife
of Christopher BANNISTER of Marlborough; but of the last two I am unable to
fix priority. He had second wife Joanna in 1662, says BARRY, and he died
late in 1663. Possibly his son Thomas was sent home in 1655, on other
business, but he may have gone to bring, 1656, Nathaniel, who may have
been born shortly before the parents came away from England and left to the
care of friends of the family.

HOWE, John, Sudbury, son of John, Warwickshire, (as a very respected
writer in Worcester Magazine, II, 30, gathers the tradition, speaking of
his relation to HOWE, Earl of Lancaster, when such a title in the peerage
had not existed for near two hundred years), had been a long time at
Watertown, freeman 13 May 1640, by wife Mary had John, born 24 Aug 1640;

Southampton, a husbandman of Penton in the same company with wife Martha,

least was here early with sons Thomas and John, well grown youths, perhaps

Call No. 974 S2. Vol. IV, pp. 596-597. Ref: C 075.
WINN, Edward, Woburn 1641, freeman 10 May 1643, by wife Joanna or Jane, who
died 8 Mar 1649, had Increase, born 5 Dec 1641, the earliest on record of
the town; probably earlier had Joseph; beside daughters Ann and Elizabeth
yet whether these were all born in England as seems probable or only a part
of them brought over by him, can be only conjectured for no mention of him
at Charlestown is found before Dec 1640. For second wife he married 10 Aug
1649, Sarah BEAL, who probable brought him no children and died 15 Mar
1680. He took third wife Ann or Hannah, widow of Nicholas WOOD, who before
was widow of William PAGE; and died 5 Sep 1682. His will of 6 May of that
year proved 6 Oct following names son Increase, son Joseph's daughter,
Sarah, three youngest children of Moses CLEAVELAND, who had married his
daughter, Ann, and youngest three children of son, George POLLY, who had
married his daughter, Elizabeth. His widow made her will, 9 Sep 1685,
proved 1 Nov 1686; but she does not enlarge our knowledge of this family.

Harlakenden, in the Defence, 1635, aged 30, wife Elizabeth 30, or 32

may have been son, brother or nephew; Elizabeth 6; Mary 2 1/2; and John,
5 months, this last was baptized at Cambridge, after arrival, by Hooker, a
fellow passenger, whose name is not found in the list, as the order of the
Privy Council would have stopped him. He is entered no doubt for purpose of
deception, as servant to Harlakenden, and probably was of County Essex. At
Cambridge he had Sarah, born Mar 1638; Jacob, 16 Jan 1640, before
mentioned; Hannah, 2 Feb 1642, died 20 Jun following but another Hannah
followed and Samuel, 3 Dec 1645, died Jul following; but another Samuel
came after; was freeman 3 Mar 1636; one of the first settlers of Billerica,
where he had second wife 6 May 1669, Mary, widow of John STEARNS, daughter
of Thomas LATHROP of Barnstable, had Mary, born 30 Apr 1670; Sarah, 20 Oct

second Mary married Nathaniel DUNKLER; the second Sarah married Joseph
CROSBY; and the third Hannah married 5 Oct 1693, John CHILD. Evidence of
his engagement in the cause of Ind. instruct. is found in a tract,
"Strength out of Weakness," published at London 1652, reprinted in 3 Mass.
Historic Collection IV 193. He was a lieutenant representative being the
first from that town of Billerica 1660, and 1663, died a captain 20 Nov
1681, aged 78 by the record of Billerica, where posterity is still
numerous.
