Collection Scope: The Research Library holds more than 200,000 books, periodicals, microforms and CD-ROMs. In addition to extensive resources for New England genealogy, the collection also includes many materials from other regions of the U.S., Canada, England, Ireland and Continental Europe.

Special Collections:

  • The manuscript collection contains over 5,000 linear feet of compiled genealogies, local history material, cemetery inscriptions, family bible records and the papers of many notable New England genealogists, including John I. Coddington, G. Andrews Moriarty, Clarence A. Torrey, Mary L. and Winifred L. Holman, Paul W. Prindle and Maclean W. McLean.
  • Clarence A. Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 (12-volume manuscript index to approximately 38,000 marriages).
  • Corbin Collection (genealogical data on central and western Massachusetts).
  • 1798 Direct Tax for Massachusetts and Maine.
  • John H. Cook collection of books on Continental European genealogy.
  • New England city directories.
  • Pre-1900 vital records for most of New England and Atlantic Canada.
  • All New England censuses, 1790-1910.
  • All Canadian censuses through 1901, plus the 1921 Newfoundland census.
  • Special book collections for Atlantic Canada, England and Ireland.
  • Comprehensive collections of books for the Midwest and South, including copies of all books printed by Genealogical Publishing Co. and Southern Historical Press.

Copies: Self-service copies are 25 cents per page. By mail, photocopies of selected pages from books and periodicals cost 35 cents per page plus $3.50 postage and handling and a service charge of $5 for every 35 pages for members or a service charge of $10 for non-members. Manuscripts can be copied (up to 25 pages per manuscript) at hourly research rates for members only. Manuscript copying is at the discretion of the manuscripts curator. All copying adheres to Copyright Law, Title 17, US Code.
