Collection Scope: Large collection in early Virginia history including (1) "Virginia Reference" collection in the Reference area of the first floor, (2) published family histories and local histories in the regular book stacks on the second and third floors, and (3) several manuscript collections containing genealogical correspondence and notes in the Manuscripts and Rare Books Department.

Special Collections: Virginia tax lists for the 1780s. Census microfilm: Virginia, 1810-1920; North Carolina, 1790-1850; and other states, 1790-1820. Published compilations of Virginia county, marriage, land, probate, church, military, emigration and immigration records.

Reference Services: The Reference Department will do limited research in response to phone, fax or e-mail questions. They will check to see if the library has materials on a certain subject and they will consult an indexed book or collection for a specific name. Copies: Self-service copies are 10 cents from paper and 25 cents from microfilm. Most self-service machines require the use of a copy card which costs $1. Photocopies are not available by mail.

Circulation: Only members of the William and Mary community and college alumni may check out books.

Interlibrary Loan: Swem Library will lend any circulating item from its collection to libraries in the U.S. and abroad which submit requests through standard ILL channels.
