5Colpitts, Kaye, Wolfville, N.S., phone call from Rick Crume, Glyndon, MN, 23 Aug. 2005.
She said John H. Pennington left Minnesota and returned to New Brunswick with his wife and children. He left them, saying he'd send for them when he found a job. But when he finally wrote to them ten years later, his wife had already remarried and didn't answer his letter. He is said to have gone "out West." Kaye's sister thinks that might mean Ontario. Kaye said her grandmother Lily Pennington lived for a while with her grandparents Rev. William and Isabella Pennington.

"W. J. WILLIS SEEKS A DIVORCE
He Names as Corespondent [sic] J. H. Pennington and Sues for $25,000
Buffalo, Aug. 30. - Two suits, one for divorce and the other for alienation of a wife's affections, have been begun, the first in this city and the second in Rochester, by William J. Willis. The defendant in the divorce case was born Miss Nellie Haines. The co-respondent is Col. J. H. Pennington, a Southerner, representing a South American syndicate, of which George Potter of Rochester is President
Mr. and Mrs. Willis were married a year ago last July, with all the fashionable accessories. July 1 of this year Mrs. Willis, who was visiting at Alden, this county, met Frank Westcott of Monroe Avenue, Rochester, a dealer in paints and oils. Westcott suggested that Mrs. Wilis meet his friend, Col. Pennington, staying at the Tifft House in Buffalo.
Col. J. H. Pennington is a fine, military-looking man. He has been for some time a familiar figure on the streets of Buffalo, his sombrero and portly presence attracting attention at once. He is believed to be wealthy.
The appointment was made, and Col. Pennington and Mrs. Willis became acquainted. The husband became suspicious and shadowed his wife. The result is that Mrs. Willis has returned to her relatives and her husband has brought suit for divorce against his wife and for $25,000 damages against the Colonel."
On 30 July 2007, the Monroe County Clerk's Office, Rochester, New York, reported that they checked records from 1895 to 1896, but could not find a court record for William J. Willis vs. John H. Pennington. They found only a promissory note between John H. Pennington and John J. Finney.
